Where the questions come from

Every practice question in Mr. Driver’s Ed is written from the state’s own official driver handbook, and each one carries a citation to the handbook page it came from — so a missed question points you at the real source rather than at a paraphrase. The handbooks themselves are publications of their respective states; they are quoted here for study reference and remain the property of their publishers.

The table below names, for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the government agency that publishes the handbook, the edition the app’s question bank was written from, a direct link to the official source, and — where the state publishes one — a direct link to its official Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean editions. Every link goes to that agency’s own official site — a .gov domain in 50 of the 51 cases, and Wyoming’s official WYDOT site, dot.state.wy.us, in the fifty-first.

A handbook edition can change after a question bank is written. If you find a question that no longer matches your state’s current handbook, write to support@mrdriversed.com and I will correct it.

The Spanish column

Thirty-seven of the 51 jurisdictions publish an official Spanish edition of their driver handbook. Where one exists and I could confirm the link was live, the last column goes straight to it, on the state’s own site. Every one of those links was checked on September 2, 2026; the full survey, including what was searched for the states that publish none, is in the repository as docs/research/spanish-handbooks-2026-09-02.md.

Two things about that column are worth more than the links.

First: the Spanish edition a state publishes is usually older than the English one, sometimes by many years. Texas’s Spanish manual is marked “Revisado en septiembre de 2017” against an English handbook revised in January 2026. Louisiana’s is from 2013, Rhode Island’s from 2015, Mississippi’s and Hawaii’s from 2017. California’s and Wisconsin’s are condensed summaries rather than full translations. So the citations in the app point to the page of the English handbook, which is the edition the questions were written from and the one your state examines you on. Use the Spanish edition to read and understand; use the English one to check a page number.

Second: the Spanish inside Mr. Driver’s Ed is mine, not the state’s. The app’s questions are written in English from the handbook and then translated by Mr. Driver’s Ed. No DMV wrote, reviewed, or approved that Spanish, and it is not connected to the Spanish handbooks linked below beyond covering the same rules of the road. There is a plain-language version of this page’s point in Spanish on the Spanish home page.

The Simplified Chinese column

Nine of the 51 jurisdictions publish an official Simplified Chinese edition of their driver handbook: the District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington. Where one exists and I could confirm the link was live, the last column goes straight to it, on the state’s own site. Every one of those links was checked on September 10, 2026; the full survey, including what was searched for the forty-two states that publish none, is in the repository as docs/research/chinese-handbooks-2026-09-10.md.

“Chinese” and “Simplified Chinese” are not the same thing, and three states publish only the other one. California, Iowa and Maryland each publish exactly one Chinese handbook and all three are Traditional — California’s is labelled only “Chinese” on its own handbooks page, and its cover mixes the two scripts. A Traditional edition is not the document a Simplified reader came for, so those three say so in the table instead of being linked as if they were — their Traditional editions are linked from the Traditional Chinese column instead. Massachusetts publishes both and its site refuses every automated request I could make, so it is marked unverified rather than linked or written off.

Two things about that column are worth more than the links.

First: the Chinese editions lag the English ones, and Michigan prints the admission in its own PDF. Page 2 of the Michigan Chinese manual reads, in English: “This is an outdated version of the What Every Driver Must Know study guide. It was last updated in: January 2022 … An updated version of this document in this language is expected in 2026.” Pennsylvania’s is the April 2021 edition; Hawaii’s was posted in 2021 against a 2023 English manual. So the citations in the app point to the page of the English handbook, which is the edition the questions were written from and the one your state examines you on. Use the Chinese edition to read and understand; use the English one to check a page number.

Second: the Chinese inside Mr. Driver’s Ed is mine, not the state’s. The app’s questions are written in English from the handbook and then translated by Mr. Driver’s Ed. No DMV wrote, reviewed, or approved that Chinese, and it is not connected to the Chinese handbooks linked below beyond covering the same rules of the road. There is a plain-language version of this page’s point in Chinese on the Simplified Chinese home page.

The Traditional Chinese column

Five of the 51 jurisdictions publish an official Traditional Chinese edition of their driver handbook: California, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland and Washington. Where one exists and I could confirm the link was live, the Traditional Chinese column goes straight to it, on the state’s own site. Every one of those links was opened on October 26, 2026; the survey is in the repository as the October 26 addendum to docs/research/chinese-handbooks-2026-09-10.md. Seven others — the District of Columbia, Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Vermont — publish a Chinese handbook only in Simplified; their links are in the Simplified column, and this column says so rather than linking a document in the other script. Massachusetts lists a Traditional manual and its site refused every automated request I could make, so it is marked unverified.

Two things about that column are worth more than the links.

First: the Traditional Chinese editions lag the English ones too. Iowa’s is dated July 2022 and Iowa marks every translation it lists “Archived”; Hawaii’s prints only a 1977, 2006 copyright and was posted in 2021 against a 2023 English manual. Maryland’s shows the other half of the problem: the file at the same address changed edition between two checks six weeks apart. So the citations in the app point to the page of the English handbook, which is the edition the questions were written from and the one your state examines you on. Use the Traditional Chinese edition to read and understand; use the English one to check a page number.

Second: the Traditional Chinese inside Mr. Driver’s Ed is mine, not the state’s. The app’s questions are written in English from the handbook and then translated by Mr. Driver’s Ed. No DMV wrote, reviewed, or approved that Chinese, and it is not connected to the Traditional Chinese handbooks linked below beyond covering the same rules of the road. There is a plain-language version of this point in Traditional Chinese on the Traditional Chinese home page.

The Vietnamese column

Twelve of the 51 jurisdictions publish an official Vietnamese edition of their driver handbook: Arkansas, California, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Washington. Where one exists and I could confirm the link was live, the Vietnamese column goes straight to it, on the state’s own site. Every one of those links was checked on September 26, 2026; the full survey, including what was searched for the thirty-nine that publish none, is in the repository as docs/research/vietnamese-handbooks-2026-09-26.md. Texas, which is sometimes said to publish one, does not: its site machine-translates web pages, and its handbook list is English and Spanish.

Two things about that column are worth more than the links.

First: the Vietnamese editions lag the English ones too. Michigan’s Vietnamese manual carries the same English disclaimer as its Chinese one — last updated January 2022, an update “expected in 2026”. Arkansas’s is Edition 8 of a study guide whose English is Edition 10, and about one page in seven is still in English; Pennsylvania’s is the April 2021 edition; Iowa marks its Vietnamese manual, like every other translation it lists, “Archived”. So the citations in the app point to the page of the English handbook. Use the Vietnamese edition to read and understand; use the English one to check a page number.

Second: the Vietnamese inside Mr. Driver’s Ed is mine, not the state’s. The app’s questions are written in English from the handbook and then translated by Mr. Driver’s Ed. No DMV wrote, reviewed, or approved that Vietnamese, and it is not connected to the Vietnamese handbooks linked below beyond covering the same rules of the road. There is a plain-language version of this point in Vietnamese on the Vietnamese home page.

The Korean column

Nine of the 51 jurisdictions publish an official Korean edition of their driver handbook: the District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington. Where one exists and I could confirm the link was live, the Korean column goes straight to it. Every one of those links was checked on September 26, 2026; the full survey is in the repository as docs/research/korean-handbooks-2026-09-26.md. California’s 2019 Korean handbook still exists as a file on its site, but no current California page offers it, so it is not linked here as a current edition.

Two things about that column are worth more than the links.

First: the Korean editions lag the English ones too. Hawaii’s Korean manual is a file named for a July 2017 edition, against a 2023 English manual; Pennsylvania’s is the April 2021 edition; Iowa marks it “Archived”. So the citations in the app point to the page of the English handbook. Use the Korean edition to read and understand; use the English one to check a page number.

Second: the Korean inside Mr. Driver’s Ed is mine, not the state’s. The app’s questions are written in English from the handbook and then translated by Mr. Driver’s Ed. No DMV wrote, reviewed, or approved that Korean, and it is not connected to the Korean handbooks linked below beyond covering the same rules of the road. There is a plain-language version of this point in Korean on the Korean home page.
